Powering Culture With Technology
While Here East’s culture of cross-pollination is underpinned by the physical spaces across campus that promote connection, it’s also powered by innovative digital infrastructure that empowers people with technology.
Here East’s Technology and Innovation Manager, Dean Hodgson, is leading the charge on this – designing an IT ecosystem that meets the diverse needs of our tenants and allows them to create, connect, and collaborate seamlessly.
We spoke to Dean to learn more about their story at Here East. From which emerging technology trends are most exciting to what Dean’s role might look like in a decade – read on to find out more.

Tell us about your story at Here East and your favourite memories here?
Dean: “My journey at Here East has been one of significant transformation, both personally and professionally. I arrived with a very clear mandate: to fundamentally redefine our IT function, shifting it from a reactive support model to a proactive, people-centric powerhouse.
“From navigating immediate challenges, I've had the privilege of architecting robust systems and infrastructure that not only work seamlessly but also cultivate a culture of technological empowerment across the campus.”
What makes Here East unique from your perspective?
Dean: “Here East is one of those rare places where innovation isn't just a claim; it's genuinely embedded in how we operate and collaborate. The diversity of tenants we support – from creators to museums and universities – ensures that no two days are ever the same, which keeps us sharp and encourages truly creative solutions.
“Where else could you be involved in major fibre upgrades, cutting-edge AI rollouts, and even encounter robot dogs all in the same week? That blend of advanced tech and diverse community is what makes us truly distinct.”
How do you harness Here East’s culture of creativity, collaboration, and bold thinking in your work?
Dean: “It's about being the enabler of that culture through technology. For creativity, I focus on building a resilient, flexible IT infrastructure that lets our teams experiment without hitting technical roadblocks, whilst also providing tenants with any support they need whenever I can.
“When it comes to collaboration, it’s about breaking down digital barriers – whether that’s rebuilding our SharePoint for seamless knowledge sharing or ensuring our communication tools just work.
“As for bold thinking, my role is often about anticipating needs and introducing innovative solutions that empower everyone to push boundaries, often before they even realise they can.”

Which emerging technology trends are you most excited about?
Dean: “While AI is undoubtedly a transformative force, my excitement lies in its strategic application – particularly the advancements in AI-powered cybersecurity, which promises to deliver unparalleled protection for our sophisticated infrastructure. Furthermore, the potential of adaptive learning platforms like Nulia to continuously empower our workforce, and the integration of intelligent automation in access control and building management, are genuinely thrilling.
“Beyond the visible, I’m keenly tracking the evolution of remote device management and the widespread adoption of zero-trust architecture – these are the foundational shifts happening 'under the bonnet' that will redefine digital security and efficiency for years to come.”
What do you think your role will look like in 10 years’ time?
Dean: “In a decade, I anticipate the traditional 'IT Manager' label will have evolved into something far more dynamic – perhaps akin to a 'Digital Experience Architect' or 'Innovation Infrastructure Lead'. My core passion for solving complex problems and empowering people will remain central, but with an intensified focus on hyper-automation, advanced user empowerment, and truly strategic technological foresight.
“I envision an infrastructure that is not just smarter and leaner, but largely self-healing and predictive. And yes, if I can dream, a world with significantly fewer cables – a true testament to our ongoing quest for seamless, intuitive technology.”
What are you looking forward to next at Here East?
Dean: “I'm excited about how the upcoming SharePoint revamp, alongside the Nulia training platform, will enable everyone across our teams to fully utilise our digital tools. This isn't just about tidiness or new features; it's about significantly boosting collaboration and productivity, whilst simultaneously removing technical hurdles and hopefully alleviating some of the stress that can come with digital workflows.”
